Continuation under present conditions

Persistence is the carrying of a distinguishable line into another condition. It concerns continuation under the relations presently available to that whole; it does not promise that the same support will remain available indefinitely.

Current Source DNA explanation. Each layer opens another view of the same identity; the original passages keep their own review state.

The central idea

Persistence is the carrying of a distinguishable line into another condition. It concerns continuation under the relations presently available to that whole; it does not promise that the same support will remain available indefinitely.

What it means

Name what is continuing and the interval being considered. A line persists while change carries enough of its defining relation for its next state to belong to that connected passage. A short-lived continuation is still a continuation; the length and conditions are part of the claim rather than hidden inside the word persistent.

Continuation becomes unequal when available relations carry some organizations and fail to carry others. Follow the particular whole, its internal routes of renewal and its surrounding conditions. A change may keep one relation usable, end another, or leave a consequence that helps a different line begin. The resulting field of next encounters is no longer the earlier one: some routes remain active, others have been lost, and retained changes can make another organization possible. This is the starting point of the source’s evolution reading. Mere repetition can preserve a line; evolution in the fuller structural account changes how continuation is organized. Pressure may expose an inadequate arrangement, and survivable restructuring can change the basin, boundary or participating relations through which history continues. A repaired route, a transformed individual and a descendant population are different outcomes. Unequal duration alone does not show which occurred. The reading begins before biological reproduction is introduced; applying it to biological evolution retains the further inheritance, population and generational mechanisms already distinguished in the source. Nothing here makes pressure a conscious chooser, requires every encounter to improve the whole, or places a sequence of trials inside non-temporal Source.

How it connects

Within Mind-Structure, the whole continues through the organization of its participants and its exchange with a surrounding whole. Internal renewal can depend on outside support; outside contact can also remove what the line needs. The same exchange can preserve one participant while making support unavailable to another, so the line and reference must remain explicit.

Geometry and representation

Read a short passage of the continuing performance. Each new note can take up the relation left by the earlier notes and carry it forward. Hearing that passage establishes continuation for that interval. It does not establish that the group can sustain the performance through every later interruption.

How it works

Follow whether the next encounter still has access to the relation needed for continuation. Useful return can renew that access, while loss or delayed return can weaken it. Support matters when it becomes available to the line, not merely when a quantity is produced elsewhere. Record the actual interval over which the defining relation is carried.

A supporting route can remain available yet arrive too late to carry the present line. Follow one declared distinction from one starting condition. Identify when enough compatible return becomes usable, and when loss makes its defining relation unavailable. In a model that supplies both events on the same declared numerical clock or interval scale, call their intervals τc and τl. Return before loss means τc < τl; the margin m = τl − τc records how much interval room remains. The expression supplies a comparison, not the dynamics that produce either interval. Delayed renewal can narrow the margin, and quicker loss can narrow it from the other side. A numerical tie needs the model’s completion and event-ordering convention; an uncertain estimate close to zero cannot classify the line confidently. A large margin at one condition does not establish a wide range across conditions. Now distinguish two thresholds. The present arrangement can cease to support the line while retained history and another route still allow recovery. Final loss of that identity occurs when its defining relation can no longer be carried through the same history. A changed part or disrupted expression can therefore precede recovery rather than final collapse. Compare the participant’s support with that of its containing whole: a local renewal may still consume the store on which later renewals depend. This makes collapse a question about the failed relation, interval and remaining routes, not a verdict supplied by one alarming change in appearance. The timing margin, a support amount and an identity-basin boundary are connected readings with different definitions; they are not one universal threshold.

Across different subjects

The older Gamma > Lambda shorthand asks whether preserving contribution exceeds loss. It becomes a numerical test only after the quantities, units, interval and relation law are defined together. Its structural use is to direct attention to what supports the line and what becomes unavailable; it does not supply one universal inequality for every body.

The proposed CITM bridge asks when the cost of an internal test can be lower than the cost it avoids outside. Begin with a declared positive scale C and fixed coefficients k>0, m>0 and alpha>1. Use one comparison horizon and compatible cost units. The printed functions are C_ext(C)=k*C^alpha and C_int(C)=m*C. Their ratio is (k/m)*C^(alpha-1), so it increases strictly on C>0 and has one positive equality point C*=(m/k)^(1/(alpha-1)). Dividing the inequality k*C^alpha>m*C by positive C shows that C_int<C_ext exactly when C>C*. At C* they tie. This is a valid mathematical conditional, not an unproved algebraic theorem. If the functions are extended to C=0, both are zero there; it is not a second positive crossover. The superlinear exponent is essential: alpha=1 gives a constant ratio, while alpha<1 reverses its trend. C is a named scale, not automatically body mass, complexity, intelligence or layer count. If it carries units, k and m must contain the corresponding scale powers. Now preserve what each cost means. A cost per failure is different from expected loss over outcomes. Numerical risk needs stated probabilities or frequencies, and bodily effort, elapsed time and injury cannot be added without a declared comparison. Let L0 be external expected loss under a baseline policy, L1 the residual external expected loss under a modeling-guided policy, and M all additional modeling, observation and delay cost, counted once. Define avoided loss A=L0-L1. The favorable comparison is L1+M<L0, equivalently A>M. Prediction error, unavailable actions or delay can reduce A; the internal process does not automatically remove the full external risk. If C_ext already means avoidable loss and C_int includes all added cost, the printed crossover gives this favorable comparison. If C_ext instead means total baseline loss, it compares only that total with modeling cost. Complete avoidance and no omitted cost is one sufficient special case; otherwise residual loss remains. A simple extension makes the difference visible. With L0=k*C^alpha, fixed avoided fraction q in (0,1], L1=(1-q)*L0 and M=m*C, the protective crossover becomes C>(m/(q*k))^(1/(alpha-1)). Assign k=1, m=4, alpha=2 and q=1/4 as an invented example. The total-cost crossover is 4, but the avoided-cost crossover is 16. At C=8, total external loss 64 exceeds modeling cost 32, yet residual loss 48 plus 32 equals 80: modeling loses this comparison. At C=16 the alternatives tie at 256. At C=32, residual 768 plus internal 128 equals 896, lower than baseline 1024 by 128. A plot can show the baseline, internal and combined-cost curves with both crossings; it preserves the declared function ordering and does not measure a brain or derive a torus. A changing avoided fraction or added delay term requires a fresh comparison. The supplied algebra exposes a possible advantage of internal testing; establishing it in a biological lineage additionally needs a measured scale, actual controller, available actions, costs and transmission or developmental history. Lower expected loss is not guaranteed survival for one individual. The source’s protective route remains meaningful without treating a favorable inequality as the mechanism that constructs or evolutionarily installs a mind.

What an observer can examine

A local line may last longer because its expense has moved outside the boundary used to judge it. The Mind book illustrates a project producing knowledge while exhausting its participants. From the project-output view, something has continued; from the participants’ view, the capacity that supplies later work may be weakening. Follow both histories and the actual relation between them. Name what is retained, what is replenished, what becomes unavailable, to whom, and over which horizon. Extra input helps only if a usable route converts it into renewal. Releasing an obsolete procedure can support a wider continuation, so retaining every local pattern is not the target. A developed observer can compare the accumulating consequences, revise a role or boundary, and test whether the changed arrangement restores support. Keep the earlier record and the later result together, including costs that merely moved elsewhere. This adds a demanding meaning to pressure-tested continuation: assess the new organization and the relations it depends upon, rather than treating local survival as proof of overall improvement. Material, effort, memory and trust need their own comparisons; calling them all cost does not give them a shared numerical unit. The wider view exposes more consequential relations without making every containing whole a conscious observer.

Declare the whole, the defining relation and the horizon. Identify which internal and surrounding relations actually supplied its continuation. A longer run can test a longer claim; it cannot turn a finite observation into indefinite persistence. If the observer changes scale, restate which line is being followed before comparing the results.

A model-bearing cognitive organization can improve the conditions of a continuing line when retained history informs possible actions, comparison changes a feasible response, and its consequences provide enough protection after internal and delay costs. The response can still fail in a particular case; a favorable expected-cost comparison is not guaranteed survival or automatic evolutionary adoption.
