Foundation · seven reading layers
What continues through change
A continuing existence carries a distinguishable relation through change. The changing state is what appears now; the identity question concerns the connected line that reaches this state and can continue from it.
Current Source DNA explanation. Each layer opens another view of the same identity; the original passages keep their own review state.
The central idea
A continuing existence carries a distinguishable relation through change. The changing state is what appears now; the identity question concerns the connected line that reaches this state and can continue from it.
What it means
Distinguishability is always read from a reference: something counts as this rather than what falls outside its present definition. Continuing distinguishability means that a later condition can still be followed as belonging to the same line even though its expression has changed. This describes manifested continuity; Source remains the possibility of such relations.

How it connects
Read the continuing whole through its internal relations, its surrounding whole and their exchange. The inside gathers what presently carries its distinction; the outside supplies conditions with which it must remain related. Their relation preserves both difference and belonging. Compatibility asks whether a particular passage can carry this distinction from this reference. A relation internal to one whole can become part of its outside when a smaller participant is followed.

Geometry and representation
Follow one performance of a melody. It may become softer, change instruments or recover its timing while its note relations and performance history remain connected. Another group can play the same melody elsewhere: the pattern is shared, while the two performances remain different lines. The example makes visible why likeness and identity answer different questions.

How it works
A present condition allows some change. Its consequence alters what is available next. Where enough of the defining relation is carried through that consequence, the line continues; where it is lost, continuation of that line ends even if other activity remains. Trace, compatible return and renewal explain how earlier passage can help sustain later passage.
Across different subjects
A trajectory can represent changing states of one process, provided its links represent actual retained consequences. The book's survivor-set notation offers a possible statistical reading, but the event space, probability measure, surviving set and time horizon must be supplied before it makes a quantitative statement. The compact sum of change, continuation and closure is retained as structural shorthand, not arithmetic between undefined quantities.
What an observer can examine
Declare the line, point of reference and observation horizon. Identify which relations must remain followable and which details may change. Then trace how the later state arose. A stored name or matching endpoint does not establish the connection. If a new comparison changes what counts as the defining relation, preserve that revised reading and revisit the earlier claims that depended on it.

Compatibility: carrying a distinction through change →
tests-carrying
Compatibility tests whether a particular passage can carry the declared distinction under its accessible conditions. The distinction and conditions must be considered together; occurrence alone does not establish preservation.
