Observer: reference, comparison and return
An observer is a continuing, internally differentiated Mind. It relates its own patterns and history to its surroundings, retains comparison, and can intentionally revise its participation and explore wider usable awareness. An observation is an act of registration or comparison; that act alone is not the complete observing Mind.
Current Source DNA explanation. Each layer opens another view of the same identity; the original passages keep their own review state.
The central idea
An observer has a position in the relations it can encounter. Observation becomes a continuing process when encounters can be retained, compared and returned into further understanding or action.

What it means
Reference states what is being read from where. Awareness concerns the relations available for active distinction and integration. A camera choice or user selection can represent a reference without establishing a self-observing mechanism. Keep two noise readings explicit: foundational noise concerns the failure of the tested line to hold; observer noise concerns access to a relation that may already continue. Unfamiliarity alone does not establish failure of the line.

How it connects
The observer receives through actual access, carries a history and attends to some available relations. A question can reveal a missing explanation or a mismatch between connected readings. Resolving it may change the source and the paths available for future readers.

An observer can receive one expression while another part of the current relation remains hidden. Retained readings help when the change between them makes a different component distinguishable. The reading must carry its reference, timing and the model that connects the encounters. More stored values are not necessarily more independent information.
Consider a declared two-state mode with u̇ = αu − ωv, v̇ = ωu + αv, and received value y = u. The constants α and ω are known, and no unrecorded input acts in this example. One reading gives u but leaves v undetermined. Its exact rate gives ẏ = αy − ωv, so v = (αy − ẏ)/ω when ω is nonzero. The two matrix rows [1,0] and [α,−ω] have determinant −ω. The continuing change makes a distinction accessible that the single instantaneous projection omitted.
Two timed readings can supply the same information without an exact derivative. At separation Δ, y₁ = exp(αΔ)[u₀ cos(ωΔ) − v₀ sin(ωΔ)]. Thus u₀ = y₀ and v₀ = [y₀ cos(ωΔ) − exp(−αΔ)y₁]/sin(ωΔ), provided sin(ωΔ) is nonzero. Half-period or whole-period sampling repeats one state direction and leaves the other hidden. After the known gain is removed and the two measurement rows are equally normalized, odd quarter-period separation makes them orthogonal, with condition number one. This gives quadrature a concrete information role beside its existing phase and reciprocal-scale readings. Unknown rates, unequal noise and uncertain timing require their own reconstruction analysis.
The recovered result is a state within this chosen model, not every fact about the observed participant or its history. An operational expansion of access supplies more jointly distinguishable relations; integration and understanding additionally require that those distinctions remain available and useful together. Another view can reveal a missing relation without creating the earlier event. The next useful observation is one that separates the remaining candidates, rather than merely repeating a familiar view.
How it works
A situated mind has several relations that can matter at once, but they are not equally available to comparison. Attention makes some content more influential now: a sound, an unfinished question, a bodily signal or an anticipated consequence. Intention maintains a direction to which attention can return after interruption. A learner may intend to understand a difficult relation, become distracted, and later resume the question using a note and another source. The heading persists through actual retained supports, not through uninterrupted concentration. In the source's aperture reading, present selection and remembered direction cooperate while remaining distinct. Selecting an existing signal does not create an unobserved fact. Attention can also lead to another look, a question, a measurement or a comparison, through which additional information becomes available. Reweighting, new registration and newly inferred relation are different operations.
The gain description is useful when it identifies what becomes more influential relative to what. It is not one numerical multiplier applying to every neural, emotional or semantic process. Reduced interference can make a previously inaccessible relation easier to inspect; the relation still needs evidence. Sustained selection may develop a useful comparison, repeatedly reactivate a distressing interpretation, or exclude a cue needed for correction. Some tasks require stable focus and others require shifting among signals. Clarity, unity and confidence describe aspects of the experience or model; they do not make its account true. In particular, a stable pattern is not always helpful and a transient signal is not automatically disposable noise. Preserve the access route and the task whose distinction is being tested.
Thought can hold competing pressures together before commitment: retained outcomes, candidates, emotional urgency, body state, values and a longer purpose. Decision names their resolution into what the system will support next. This need not invoke a separate inner ruler, but it does not exclude real coordinating and inhibitory processes. Deliberately waiting, refusing, asking for evidence and acting are different available responses. Agency in this reading is the capacity to participate in that selection through retained comparison, modeled consequences, inhibition and maintained priorities. More internal competition alone does not establish it. Practical alternatives depend on the body, time, knowledge, other people and surrounding restrictions; having an imagined option does not make it executable.
Once commitment changes preparation or action, resources and time are allocated and other routes can narrow. The selected response meets outside conditions and other histories, so the chooser participates in an outcome without owning it completely. Returned consequence can change the next choice, and repeated supported returns can make a route habitual. The source's progression toward an identity attractor describes a possible consolidation to establish, not an inevitable result of every action. Its optimal-control-like chain is a functional correspondence: memory supplies conditions, imagination candidates, attention selection, emotion urgency and decision an expected improvement under a model. An actual optimal controller additionally needs specified dynamics, information, feasible actions, costs and horizon. The existing conditional policy-and-loss reading makes that distinction concrete. Neither the label optimal nor a feeling of resolution supplies the comparison, and a chosen lower-cost expectation may still prove wrong.

The observer chapter begins with a function inside a continuing relation. A whole receives a difference, carries a consequence and may use that consequence when another encounter arrives. The later comparison must belong to the system being explained. An outside analyst can compare successive positions of a moving object even when the object contains no corresponding record or comparison path. Coupling, registration, present-state control, memory in use and continuing observation are therefore distinguishable achievements. Calling a thermostat a primitive observer function usefully locates receiving and comparing; the device's actual design determines how much of the larger organization it has.
Consider a declared simple controller. Its present temperature is T, its fixed setpoint is S, and it enables heat when T is below S. This compares a current input with a maintained reference. With S = 20 and T = 19 in the same temperature scale, it gives the same answer whether the preceding reading was 18 or 22. A setpoint is retained configuration, not automatically a record of earlier contact. Add a stored preceding reading r and the difference d = T - r. The two histories now yield +1 and -3: warming and cooling over the declared sampling interval. A second illustrative policy enables heat only when T < S and d <= 0, then stores T as r for the next sample. Under that policy the two histories yield different responses despite the same present reading. If d is only logged and cannot affect any later work, that extra archive does not supply this return. These are declared control calculations, not a measured thermostat or a claim that the second policy keeps a building viable. A plant model, delays, actuator limits, disturbances and appropriate control criterion would be needed to assess regulation.
The repaired Mind manuscript deepens this example from local comparison into observation of a whole. A retained trace is brought into the current reference at a declared resolution and compared with the present. Preserve any reference transformation; changing the frame silently can look like a changed object. The relevant local comparisons then become a whole-level registration that keeps consequential differences, rather than averaging conflicting needs into apparent balance. Their integration describes the present condition; prediction of a possible future is an additional operation. Observation becomes a continuing observer when the registered consequence remains available, returns into later operation and participates in the next comparison. The return can change receiving sensitivity, the response route or subsequent integration. A result stored without such use does not complete it. In the source's diagnostic, varying a usable integrated comparison can alter the later joint condition even when immediate outside contact is similar.
Inward and outward name two orientations of this same route. Boundary contact changes an internal condition; that condition changes later outward participation. Neither orientation gives access to every internal state or to the outside independently of the receiving route. The comparisons can be distributed across pathways and delays while belonging to one connected whole. Recursion here means that relations among current and retained relations themselves become consequential; repeating a triad in a diagram is insufficient. This is the precise functional sense of closure tracking itself. It does not say that an observer must remember every detail, that a single comparison is already self-reflection, or that conscious witnessing creates a previously unregistered physical event. A local reality is the available registration and organized relation to surroundings; action through that organization can change what happens next.

Follow a measurement through what couples, what changes, what can be distinguished, and how that difference becomes available to a later encounter. Something must carry the relevant distinction long enough for the actual response or readout. This does not require the measured object to stay unchanged afterward: a transient encounter can produce a longer-lived detector state. In the Manual’s examples, a click, pointer position, voltage change or chemical mark can carry a record. State which alternatives the apparatus can separate, under which conditions, and for how long its record remains accessible. A durable mark that cannot be related to the measured alternatives is not yet a usable measurement of them. Formation, availability and use are distinct moments. A record can exist before anyone reads it; comparison can occur later if the record can be brought into a compatible reference. When retained difference actually changes a later response it takes the memory role already described under trace. A record need not already be conscious memory, and an apparatus that records a response need not organize a continuing comparison-and-return observer. Mere coupling is also insufficient: identify what was registered rather than assuming every interaction supplies a measured result. In quantum examples use the existing field account: the state, interaction and measurement description are declared, and local interference suppression is distinct from an account of one unique global outcome. Calling a record local does not declare a local hidden-variable theory. An observer’s interpretation is a later relation to the record and its provenance; it is not a conscious act that creates the earlier physical encounter.
A stable reader identity can store visited positions and questions separately from source revisions. Questions enter a research queue; resolution removes them from the open queue while retaining the answer and history. Local reader profiles currently provide this continuity; a real account adapter is needed for Internet sign-in.

Prediction becomes a further observer capability when retained experience and a present condition can be used to model a possible continuation. The repaired Mind book distinguishes an integrated description of the present from a model of possible futures. Its minimal comparison-and-return observer does not already have every later predictive, intentional or self-aware capacity. The Manual’s protective-mind chapter then describes a living system that can rehearse candidate actions, allow expectations to influence action, receive consequences and revise the model. This is a particular functional reading of mind within the wider Mind-Structure grammar. It does not redefine every triad, source graph or website profile as a living predictive mind. Follow the whole loop: what earlier evidence was retained, how it was brought into the current reference, which continuation was expected, which action or observation followed, and what returned to correct that expectation. A simulation is a real internal or computational activity representing a possible event; it is not evidence that the represented event occurred. Repetition can strengthen an expectation while leaving it wrong. Successful prediction once can also leave important alternatives unresolved. Compare the result with the stated target and conditions, retain the mismatch, and revise the particular interpretation or model that the evidence bears on. Do not silently redefine success after the event. Changed surroundings, changed access and a changed model are different explanations for changed predictions. This keeps correction connected to the history that produced it and allows a reader to inspect why the explanation changed.
Imagination is internal reconstruction and exploration of possibilities beyond what is presently registered. It differs from prediction: reconstruction completes an insufficient present description under a retained rule; prediction adds a rule relating present to later condition. A known generative relation can reduce the amount of fresh information needed to recover a configuration, but more unconstrained variables can make a structure less reconstructable, not more. The compatible reconstruction set C(R,f,y)={x in S_R : H_f(x)=y} formalizes this: given a retained rule R, access f, and received data y, the set of compatible configurations is determined by which satisfy the rule and match the observation. When C contains one configuration, the data uniquely reconstructs it. When C contains several, an honest model retains several until another independent observation narrows the set. A further independent observation can distinguish alternatives; if no candidate fits new contact, the retained rule may need revision. Imagination supplies possible completions from retained structure; it is not promoted to observed event merely because the drawing is vivid. The comparing triad remains: present registered condition, retained model or reconstructed alternative, and their relation holding agreement, difference and what remains unresolved.

In this whole-field address construction, W denotes the whole of a differentiated field. Begin with three roles I, O, R; each can address itself and the other two, giving 9 field positions. These 9 positions address every other position (81 field-to-field addresses), plus 9 field-to-whole and 9 whole-to-field addresses, totaling 99. The whole W is added as a self-inclusive 10th address (W→W self-return), giving (9+1)×(9+1)=100 positions. The one in 99+1 is not an additional entity; it is the whole itself, addressed in its own relational map. Opening that address must retain what it refers to. This recursive structure can be opened again within every address and addressed within a larger field, continuing inward and outward without a final endpoint. Retained whole-level comparison-and-return is a supporting operation across the organization. Observer can also name a local reference or observational point in the author’s contextual vocabulary. In the complete-Mind context, the observing participant has the wider organized capacities described there and is not a separate point above the field.

Use the three-state proposal as three complementary questions about a declared process. First choose a reference condition and say what it calibrates: the variable, reading convention, comparison response and relevant surroundings. A reference need not be an average, a neutral state or an ideal of health. A known comparison makes a departure interpretable; naming a centre does not make it true. Next examine a specified disturbance or an extreme along a declared variable. Extreme means relative to that range and direction, and need not reveal every form of stress. Record the response and what remains recoverable, using the existing identity and basin criteria. Finally, if the process recurs, follow the ordered route and what counts as a return. If no recurrence has been established, keep a trajectory record without inventing a cycle. These are observation questions, not three compulsory states through which every persistent system must pass. Keep the reference, access and resolution visible across all three readings. In the Manual’s C0 → C1 → C2 → C1* → C0′ example, the two C1 appearances can look alike while preceding and returning histories differ. A snapshot may omit that direction. The ordered record can resolve it when the relevant history is available. Even then, recurrence of a form does not by itself establish one connected identity. Integration should retain the differences that matter to the whole instead of assuming that an average summarizes them. A web page can present these comparisons in an authored order; it does not create recurrence, calibration or observerhood merely by switching views.

A difference becomes available to a bodily observer through a receiving route. Name the external or internal event, the receptor or other carrier it reaches, the body’s present condition and the resulting signal. Light, vibration, chemical contact, tissue deformation and changes within the body are different inputs with different transduction mechanisms; calling them pressure here does not give them one physical unit. The resulting signal carries a selected relation to the event, rather than the entire event in miniature. In the classic cat visual-cortex study, individual recorded cells responded selectively to arrangements and orientations of visual stimuli. That locates one stage of registration; it does not mean one cell sees a finished object or that all senses use the same circuit. Sensitivity and available channels determine which differences can affect later processing. A trace from an earlier encounter can also change the receiving condition, so the same input need not meet the same bodily organization. Sensation can give a protective interval when a relevant difference is registered and a response can occur before a further harmful consequence. It also registers ongoing injury, ordinary contact, useful opportunities and internal change. The before-damage role is a possible advantage, not the definition of every sensation or a guarantee that warning arrives in time. Registration, integration, felt experience and reflective understanding remain different questions. A chemical response can have functional significance for its cell without establishing a subjective experience. For a capable organism, several channels and retained comparisons can make a signal available to a wider coordinated response. The observer’s access grows through actual additional relations—another view, another sense, a measurement or a recoverable record—not merely by increasing the number of labels in a source graph.

An exact deterministic reconstruction G with g = G∘E exists if and only if observationally identical states have the same required result: E(w₁)=E(w₂) implies g(w₁)=g(w₂). If two admissible states look identical to the observer but require different answers, one must add an observation that separates them, restrict the state family through a justified constraint, or ask for a less detailed result. A more elaborate display of the same data cannot restore the missing distinction. For a task with N distinct possible answers, the observer must distinguish at least N classes of input; with a noiseless fixed-length binary message, b bits provide at most 2^b different codes, so b must be at least ceiling(log₂(N)). This bound is attainable by assigning a distinct code to each answer. The minimal task code groups states by the answer g(w), not necessarily by every physical detail of w. A concrete example: three distances determine a triangle's congruence class; oriented coordinates need reference frame and reflection distinction. Geometry describes a relation of position or shape under a specified interpretation; a matrix can express the same declared constraint. Neither representation supplies an absent causal force law. The immediate foundational work is to apply this distinction test to the existing engine: name its actual state and retained history, observation map and reference, the relation to be reconstructed, and the conditions under which that relation remains identifiable through phase change and delayed return.

The older experience formula lists lag, memory, prediction, emotion, attention and self-model. Treat these as roles to explain in a particular observer account. Current use of consciousness as available compatible possibility is a separate definition; do not silently substitute the older cognitive meaning.

A registered difference can change the wider body’s readiness: what feels urgent, attractive, aversive, effortful or relieving. The source calls this continuity-weight. It connects the signal to the condition of one living whole and to the responses available to it. This is a functional description of valuation; the conscious quality of a feeling is not established merely by assigning a weight to a chemical response. Felt intensity, physical stimulus, tissue condition, action readiness and a chosen numerical cost are different observations. In a study of thermal pain, adults given the same specified stimulation reported different intensities with differing regional brain responses. The report and the measurement can inform one another without one becoming a universal conversion table for the other. A cost-field representation becomes numerical only after its variables, units or score convention, interval and empirical mapping have been supplied. No such universal mapping makes all emotion one scalar gradient. Pain can interrupt a harmful trajectory and direct attention toward protection or repair. It can also persist or dominate in ways that do not secure useful return. Pleasure can encourage approach or repetition of a relation that appears supportive, while a later or wider consequence may be harmful. The newer source explicitly separates immediate reinforcement from that larger result. Neither pleasantness nor calm certifies safety; neither pain nor fear identifies its cause without interpretation. Follow the line and horizon: a response may give immediate relief while narrowing later options or burdening another part of the whole. The felt event remains real even when its explanation needs correction. A person can acknowledge fear while checking whether the current situation fits its apparent warning. That example illustrates a distinction in interpretation, not a diagnosis or treatment rule. Sensation, feeling and perception can influence one another through a developing bodily history. Their different roles should remain visible instead of treating them as an obligatory serial pipeline or equating an observed response with another subject’s first-person life.

The chapter’s levels are useful when each names a capability and its supporting relations. A reference specifies what is read from where. Physical registration means that an encounter produces distinguishable consequences in an apparatus or other carrier; the older phrase physical observer is a scoped use of this term. Biological sensing adds a selective conversion route by which an encountered difference modulates internal state and can alter response. Its receiver, sensitivity and present condition affect what is registered. A receiver may miss a difference, saturate under strong input or respond to a misleading match. Regulating sensitivity concerns a usable response for the declared continuation; amplifying every signal is not a universal optimum. Contact alone does not establish sensing, and a signal need not be a complete representation of its source. A retained mark is a further resource; it becomes memory in use when it affects a later response. The repaired Mind book then asks whether retained and present differences can be compared, integrated at the relevant whole, and returned into further encounters. That continuing organization is more than a selected viewpoint, a collection of local reactions or an archive of marks. The Manual’s conscious-observer paragraph belongs to a later cognitive reading: content is coordinated with memory, anticipation and action so that it is available across a continuing inner account. Representing content alone does not demonstrate this organization or provide a sufficient test of subjective experience. Keep that cognitive use of consciousness distinct from the current core use concerning available compatible possibility. Self-reference adds the observing process or modeler’s own state and participation to what can be represented and used. A self-aware account involves that relation to a continuing self; a stored name, self label or feedback arrow alone does not establish it. The source also allows a self-model to be mistaken, so ownership and familiarity do not guarantee accuracy. When returned evidence disagrees with that model, the disagreement can be retained and used to revise the represented self without ending the continuing self; preserving continuity need not preserve every present self-image. These are distinctions to inspect, not a universal evolutionary timetable or four compulsory substances. A system can support some capabilities without the others. A Body can show the same encounter as physical registration, sensing, retained comparison or cognitive self-reference while keeping the lens and evidence visible. It can invite the human reader to compare these views; switching the page itself does not confer those capacities on the website.

The source's observer continues through a relation among present contact, retained consequence, integration and usable return. A state estimator gives one precise mathematical correspondence: it carries an estimate forward while comparing its expected reading with what arrives. The estimated object can keep changing throughout that correction.
Let the modeled system obey ẋ = Ax and supply y = Cx. Let the estimate obey ṁ = Am + L(y − Cm), using the same known A and C. The first term continues the model; the difference between received and predicted readings corrects it. For e = m − x, subtraction gives ė = (A − LC)e. If every eigenvalue of A − LC has negative real part, the estimation error tends to zero. This concerns error between two evolving states, not a requirement that the object stop moving.
In the checked two-state example, A = [[−0.15,−2],[2,−0.15]], C = [1,0] and L = [2,0]ᵀ. The error eigenvalues are −1.15 ± i√3. The retained estimate therefore converges for that model even while the modeled phase continues. The correction assumes the specified dynamics and measurement relation; model error, unknown input, noise and changing reference must be represented if present. A small measurement residual alone cannot certify an unobservable hidden component.
This estimator changes its own retained state. A return into the observed system is a further specified route, such as changing a sensor, an actuator or a later receiving condition. If the correction is used only by an outside analyst, it remains that analyst's reconstruction. If it is part of the whole being explained and changes later integrated comparison or participation, it provides a concrete comparison-and-return operation within that whole. The current library's retained phase comparison is a different implemented mechanism whose own reference and return bindings remain identifiable; the estimator equation is a worked correspondence, not its replacement.
A nonlinear correspondence uses retained samples differently. In the archived Takens result, on a compact m-dimensional manifold, a generic smooth invertible evolution map and a generic smooth scalar observable give an embedding through 2m+1 successive delayed coordinates. Under those hypotheses, the delay vector distinguishes states and represents their dynamical structure. This is a sufficient generic construction, not a universal minimum or a guarantee for every sensor, fixed sampling choice, noisy finite record or changing law. The reconstructed coordinates also need not preserve physical Euclidean distances. Retention supplies useful access when the successive readings remain independent enough and interpretable under the dynamics; the presence of a long archive alone does not establish that condition.
What an observer can examine
The source uses consciousness in this chapter for an integrated cognitive field, and awareness for content available within that coordination. This is a particular use of the words. The current core's possibility-facing consciousness and awareness as relation to compatible possibility remain distinct; neither definition silently supplies the other's biological mechanism. Begin with what a content can actually do. A local change may influence a response without becoming available for report, comparison or deliberate inhibition. Wider functional access is present when the content can participate through identified routes in memory, body-state regulation, attention, anticipated action or correction. The source's plus-list names interacting dependencies; it is not an arithmetic sum or evidence that every content must engage every listed role simultaneously. A reported content, an available function and first-person experience are related observations, not interchangeable measurements.
The global-coordination threshold is a functional proposal to investigate at a declared scale. Identify the content, carrier, receiving processes, temporal interval and change in availability; do not infer it from a generic coherence number or a graph becoming connected. A primary preregistered study of particular neural theories found a mixture of supporting and challenging results using consciously visible stimuli. Its tested neural predictions do not settle one universal access threshold or establish subjective experience in every integrated system. This preserves the source's later cognitive coordination reading without turning it into a universal consciousness test. A detailed biological model remains a further task.
Exploring an internal state-space means following how represented relations, attention and comparisons can change within a continuing mind. It need not mean spatial travel through extra physical dimensions. Less interference can let an observer distinguish relations that earlier processing obscured, but an apparent deeper order still needs a return to evidence. Vividness, fluency, unity and a feeling of truth do not certify the represented claim. The source explicitly allows a coherent false model. More access is useful when the newly available difference can challenge or refine what the whole does next, rather than merely strengthen familiarity.
Reflection adds the modeler's state and participation to the represented situation. The person can compare what was expected with what occurred, ask how fear or prior belief influenced the interpretation, and change a later comparison or action. This is more than attaching a self-name to content. Distinguish the ability to represent oneself, the felt experience of self, and the practical ability to revise that representation. The source's sequence from sensing to integrated awareness and self-awareness names capabilities with different supports; it does not prove a universal chronology or seven physical layers. A self-model may inherit scripts, overstate control, fragment its account of events or mistake shame and approval for a complete identity. Correction requires a route for disagreement to be retained and used. The existing self-reference reading explains why revising the model need not end the continuing self. Here its positive consequence is renewed participation: another question, changed attention, a different response or a more adequate account of one's limits. None guarantees correctness once and for all.
When an observer looks backward, three things must be kept separate: what histories were possible, what the observer does not know, and what consequences remain accessible. A trace constrains a reconstruction because it is a surviving consequence of an encounter; the same trace need not identify one unique history. Start by stating the candidate histories and what each would leave under the declared conditions. Inspect which records, marks or later effects are actually available, how they could have changed, and what remains unresolved. A missing record is meaningful only in relation to what could have been retained and detected. It does not automatically settle whether an event occurred. Conversely, an available possibility is not evidence that it happened. Geometry can show candidate routes and surviving marks; a matrix can express declared alternative transitions. Neither representation restores missing evidence by itself. A qualitative preference between explanations must state its reasons; numerical probabilities additionally require outcomes, conditioning and a supported model. This is a method for disciplined inquiry through Mind-Structure, not a way to confirm a preferred history from resemblance.
An experienced present can contain more than incoming contact. A recent event may still influence readiness; a remembered relation may become relevant; a possible next event may already organize preparation. Body condition and available action help determine which of those relations can be carried together. Two observers can therefore meet one external event from different histories without inhabiting different physical events. The source's layered present is this active organization, not a universal interval size or a sum of emotion, memory and reality in one unit.
Retained overlap can support distinguishing before and after before a person can explain clock time. The later comparison must actually reach the relevant whole and return into its operation. Overlap alone does not derive subjective feeling: the repaired Mind chapter explicitly leaves felt experience beyond its structural observer construction. A person's report, the operation that carries evidence and the proposed cause of the report remain connected but different observations.
To investigate felt time, name the task. Reproducing a remembered interval, reporting that time seemed slow, separating two rapidly presented events, and judging their order ask different questions. In the frightening-fall study, remembered duration expanded without a corresponding improvement on the rapid-digit task. That is a useful example of two measures coming apart, not a universal account of fear or a validation of the weighted-path formula.
The Manual connects unresolved expectation, bodily pressure and repeated checking with a present that can feel prolonged. It connects fluent, supported action with a present that can feel lighter. Preserve those phenomenological possibilities while checking what changed in the particular observer: attention to the interval, recalled events, anticipation, action timing or a measured neural variable. Fluent action can contain many state changes; a smooth path is not necessarily a short one. Threat, pain, waiting and uncertainty need not move every temporal judgment in one direction.
In a teaching Body, display external event times, the chosen state trace, its weighting and any reported estimate separately. Let the reader change the reference and see which differences the projection keeps or loses. The same source can then support a narrative, a trajectory comparison or a matrix reading while preserving the observer's provenance. Moving a page camera changes the representation; it does not establish that the reader's temporal awareness has changed.

Perception organizes partial contact into relations an organism can use: an object that remains recognizable from another angle, a path relative to reach, or a sound related to a source. Present signals meet retained history, bodily condition, expectations and possible action. Different perspectives can therefore disclose different relevant relations in the same surroundings. The constructed local view is constrained by a shared world that can answer it; it is neither the whole world nor an unconstrained private invention. Selective omission is not automatically inaccuracy. A representation can omit irrelevant detail while estimating the chosen property well. In a human visual-and-touch height task, combined judgments resembled integration that weighted the more reliable signal more strongly. That is a particular accuracy result, not proof of optimal perception everywhere. Attention can increase the relative influence of one available pattern. A stronger influence may help a task, obscure another cue or sustain an error; attention, reinforcement of a belief and support for the whole’s continuation are not interchangeable. When a cue is ambiguous, acting early can sometimes be justified by unequal consequences. A false alarm can be less costly than a missed catastrophe under stated conditions; frequent or costly false alarms can also undermine the response. Compare actual likelihoods, available actions, delay and both error consequences before claiming an advantage. The functional lesson is timely action with correction, not that perception is indifferent to truth. A familiar expectation can help recover an object across interruption while also forcing new evidence into an old interpretation. Movement, another sensory channel, instruments, public records and another observer can make the missing relation available. They do not guarantee agreement, but they provide routes for testing it. Ask what was registered, what was inferred, which signal was weighted and what consequence changed the inference. A perceived identity is also a model of a participant: recognizing a familiar pattern does not prove that two similar objects are one continuing individual. Preserve history and the chosen recognition criterion. As the observer moves through references and layers, a source-backed teaching Body can expose these relations and their evidence; changing the view does not alter the event or manufacture the user’s understanding.
The chapter's proposed workspace joins internal simulation, action gating, shared availability and phase coordination. Their roles must remain visible: represented alternatives can be compared before commitment; an available response can be delayed or inhibited; a content can reach other participating operations; timing may condition that exchange. These are connected functional questions, not four anatomical compartments. The existing conscious-access reading explains the wider comparison and correction route. The current core's possibility-facing use of consciousness remains distinct from this chapter's cognitive coordination proposal. Neither word supplies the missing biological mechanism of the other.
The proposed phase threshold adds a particular measurement question. If R is defined as the magnitude of the mean of selected unit phase vectors, it measures agreement of those phase coordinates. Four equally phased clocks can have R=1 while no channel carries one register's content to the others. Four alternating phase offsets can instead have R=0 while an explicitly wired broadcast makes that content available for retention and a chosen later response. These declared examples separate timing statistics from actual content access; they do not model neurons or subjective life. To relate R>R_c to access in a particular system, the source still needs defined carriers, phase extraction, routes, behavior and evidence for the threshold. The exact unprovided mechanism remains attached to the original passages.
The newer Manual makes the meditation passage more concrete. A quieter setting can expose patterns that were already active: bodily tension, remembered pressure or an impulse to react. A person can distinguish what belongs to the current encounter from what an earlier history contributes. Attention can notice a thought without repeatedly rehearsing it, and a comparison can leave another response available. This is an illustrative structural reading, not a report that every quiet interval produces understanding. The useful change is what becomes distinguishable, can be retained and compared, and returns into later participation. Silence can reveal discomfort rather than erase activity.
The original route is preserved: reduced external interference → less loss from a continuing purpose → improved coordination → longer-range internal correlation → wider usable access. Each arrow needs its own conditions. Which input competed with which comparison? What support had become unavailable, and did a usable return restore it? A repeated practice can maintain access to an orientation across interruptions when its retained consequence changes the next encounter. Repetition that preserves only an outward form does not establish that function. Removing a signal needed for correction would narrow access even if the result felt calmer. The source keeps different practices distinct and asks what each pattern of return actually strengthens.
Primary studies give these questions several different measurements. In a self-selected three-month retreat comparison, second-target reporting improved alongside reduced processing of the first target; participants were not meditating during the test. A further analysis of that same experiment related successful target perception to more consistent theta phase across trials. A separate compassion-practice study reported increased long-distance gamma phase synchrony in a particular experienced group, while leaving functional consequences unresolved. A small MEG study of instructed self-experience found different reports of diminished ownership or quieting with particular power changes. These are task performance, event locking, between-site synchrony, signal power and subjective report. They do not measure one interchangeable coherence quantity or jointly establish every arrow of a meditation-to-unity chain.
The current source explicitly treats greater integration as a possible account of a reported unity experience. It preserves the inward event while distinguishing its interpretation, the actions it informs and claims about the wider world. Changed felt self-boundary does not by itself establish that the continuing person or their history disappeared. Nor does intensity establish universal knowledge. An interpretation becomes answerable to further experience and shared consequence when disagreement can enter and change later work. The source's phase language here names receiving readiness and recoverability; identifying it with a measured neural angle would require a separate mapping.
From this standpoint, wider awareness can include uncertainty, conflicting needs and a previously unseen limit. It does not require flattening every difference into agreement. The observer can return to the original question with a more adequate distinction, a revised assumption or another available response. That is the connection between practice, the active structure of Mind and living source correction: the comparison must become consequential to the same ongoing work. The measured domain examples enrich that account at their declared scope, while the unprovided universal phase rule stays an explicit research task.

Keep the variable and reference identifiable when changing viewpoint. If the reference shifts silently, an apparent change of excursion may be a changed description. Sampling can also conceal a return: a coarse view may show smoothness, flicker or irregularity where finer records distinguish a repeated phase order. Changing access does not create that underlying history. State the observation resolution, clock relation, cycle criterion and omitted variables before comparing readings. A frequency band describes cycle rates; an accessible reality band describes what this observer or system can encounter; a viability or recoverability band concerns continuation under the declared conditions. The Body can reveal these separately while retaining the source identity. A larger accessible view may expose a missing dependency without proving the line is stable.

reconstructs-evidence-about
An observer uses accessible retained evidence to constrain a description of an identity history. Evidence can be incomplete or permit several reconstructions; a reconstructed description is not itself the process whose continuity is being investigated.

Geometry: relations made spatially readable →
reconstructs-through-independent-constraints
An observer can recover a specified geometric description when its available relations determine the chosen shape class at the required precision. Redundant measurements, local rigidity and global uniqueness must be distinguished; recovering a description does not identify a unique causal history.

separates-forecast-from-outcome
An observer estimates a specified continuation under stated information and conditions, then compares that forecast with later evidence. The estimate, the process’s conditional tendency and one completed outcome are different; neither a phase label nor a broader scale fixes their predictability.
