question
What would it mean for a relation to be conserved?
The author’s proposal becomes testable when we name the quantity, boundary and transformation that should preserve it.
Open author research question with a checked conditional energy balance. Conservation of a general quantity called relation has not been established.
Retain the question precisely
When a local system gives something to its surroundings, a wider account may recover what left its boundary. This suggests a useful question about relations carried through transformation. It does not yet identify one number that every relation conserves.
Exact invariance, transfer, approximate retention and later recoverability are different possibilities. The investigation should say which one it expects before examining the result.
A complete energy account includes interaction
In the two-mode example, total energy includes both motions and their complete shared potential. Multiplying each motion equation by its velocity yields power supplied by the drive minus losses to the damping environments.
The internal coupling terms cancel against the derivative of the interaction energy. Leaving out that interaction would make the parts’ account incomplete. This demonstrates why the wider relation belongs in an account, while remaining an energy balance under a specified law.
dE/dt = F cos(ωt)qₐ′ − Γₐqₐ′² − Γᵦqᵦ′²
Now choose a relational observable
A proposed invariant might concern a geometric constraint, a phase combination, a transfer balance or another measurable organisation. Define it and the transformations allowed. Then compare its behaviour with a case that breaks the candidate relation.
A system can preserve energy accounting while losing a particular organisation. Conversely, it can preserve a useful organisation while exchanging energy with its surroundings. Neither result should be silently substituted for the other.
Questions to carry forward
Which relation should be tested first?
Choose one system already described by explicit equations, a candidate observable and a boundary. Test whether it is constant, transported, bounded or recoverable; retain a negative result too.
