Nested substrates · one causal return loop

A carbon-based person can interact with a world rendered by electronic hardware—without implying migration into it.

Human intention can change electronic state; computation can render a virtual consequence; sight, sound, or touch can return information and influence the person's next intention. This causal coupling is ordinary and testable. It does not by itself transfer the observer.

Outside → inside → another outside

In this model, each layer is treated as a bounded system within a wider system.

The software can represent nested layers. Here “inside” means represented and causally coupled through a device—not physically contained in silicon. Whether real systems form further observer-like levels remains an open hypothesis.

    environment · reference

    Material and planetary field

The physical and ecological world containing the human, device, power, network, and all material exchanges.

  2. 02
    biological observer · reference

    Carbon-based human

An embodied organism with metabolism, sensation, memory, action, social history, and first-person reports.

  3. 03
    interface · reference

    Sensory and motor bridge

Hands, voice, cameras, microphones, displays, speakers, haptics, and protocols translate action between systems.

  4. 04
    host substrate · reference

    Heterogeneous electronic host

Semiconductors, conductors, dielectrics, memory, power, storage, and networks carry changing digital state. “Silicon” is shorthand, not the entire machine.

  5. 05
    runtime · project design

    Y relational runtime

Software represents identities, relations, events, delay, residue, projection, and return under declared rules.

  6. 06
    rendered world · project design

    Virtual element and relation field

Digital states become a represented environment with elements, events, causes, consequences, and viewpoint-specific output.

  7. 07
    virtual body · open hypothesis

    Represented organism or agent

A body-model can sense and act within the virtual field according to the capabilities actually implemented.

  8. 08
    local observer-world · open hypothesis

    Identity-relative projection

One point of view exposes an accessible subset of the shared field, its history, uncertainty, and hidden remainder.

The missing half is return

Output and feedback form one loop.

  1. 01Carbon intention

A person chooses, speaks, moves, or attends.

  2. 02Interface encoding

The action becomes a signal a device can distinguish.

  3. 03Electronic change

Hardware and software transform state under implemented rules.

  4. 04Virtual consequence

The simulated state changes and renders viewpoint-specific output.

  5. 05Sensory return

Light, sound, or touch provides new sensory input to the person.

  6. 06Renewed intention

The experienced consequence can redirect the person's next action.

Do not jump across the gaps

Five different achievements need five different tests.

The founder's portal and continuity intuition becomes more useful when the intermediate claims are separated. A success at one level cannot silently certify the next.

01Already ordinary

Representation

One substrate carries a model or symbol of another identity.

02Partial and task-specific

Emulation

A model reproduces selected functions or behavior under defined tests.

03Already ordinary

Causal coupling

Change crosses an interface and produces consequences in both systems.

04Not established

Identity migration

The claim that one identity moves rather than being copied or newly instantiated.

05Unresolved

Observer continuity

The claim that one first-person stream remains numerically continuous across the change.

Observer depth

Which system computes, senses, models, or self-models?

This ladder classifies implemented functions, not consciousness. A human watching a virtual organism is not the same event as that organism modeling its own operation.

  1. 1
    Simulator-relative projection

An external engine calculates a view. No experience claim follows.

  2. 2
    Sensor state

Outside change creates a differentiated internal state.

  3. 3
    Model-bearing identity

History supports an internal reconstruction or prediction.

  4. 4
    Decision-updating system

A whole-system comparison changes later operation. This is a functional label, not a claim of phenomenal awareness.

  5. 5
    Self-modeling system

The system's own sensing, modeling, and decision process becomes part of its model.
